Welcome
Welcome to my Linux page, which, aptly named, is All Things Linux. This
page is maintained by Kerry J. Cox and will
be a clearinghouse of information for anything and everything that has to do
with Linux. It is my aim to provide a resourceful link for those interested
in trying the best OS available, Linux. If for no other reason than to break
Microsoft's monopoly on software, Linux provides an extremely viable
alternative to personal computing. I recommend it for both server and desktop use.
My Linux Box
I'm currently running Red Hat 7.3 on an Athlon 500 with 256 megs of RAM. I have a Voodoo3 2000 AGP video card with 16 megs of RAM running on a 19" monitor. I must say this is a step up from the 486 machine I was using before with only 8 megs of RAM, but even so it ran as well as, if not better than, my other Windows95 machine. With this much power now on my machine and running Linux, I have to say that it is a much better OS than Win95 could ever hope to be.
I enjoy working with Linux so much that I even wrote a book about it. Though this page itself is somewhat older, the contents of my book cover all the latest items from the most recent Red Hat Linux release. You can search for my book on Amazon.com, Fatbrain.com, Borders.com or Barnes and Noble.com. The name of the book is "Red Hat Linux Administrator's Guide". I highly recommend it.
Hopefully, after looking through some of these links, you'll think the same.
If you are interested in seeing just what Linux is capable of doing, here is
my current desktop. I am now
using Window Maker as my GUI interface. It appears more stable than AfterStep
1.0 which is what I was using. Here's also a shot from a couple months ago and an older shot of my desktop.
Feel free to peruse my older AfterStep 1.0 .steprc file. For those of you now using Window Maker, such as myself, here's my menu. Hope it helps.
For those of you who are really interested in testing the Linux waters, GNUware offers over 1000 different Linux programs with all the source included. It's very reasonably priced at $10.00 for over 600 megabytes of useful and entertaining programs.
My 2 Cents
Here's my opinion about Linux. The primary
purpose of this page is to provide links to informative sites about the Linux
operating system. It is intended not only to assist in promoting Linux, but
also for my own personal use, i.e. a quick reference to frequently visited
sites. If a link is broken or you feel additional information should be
added, please contact me. I speak German,
Portuguese, Spanish and Russian and would be happy to assist anyone who is
interested in setting up a Linux box. I have just added several excellent
links to Linux News Sources. Tell me what you
think.
