Volume Adjustment

From time to time, you may need to adjust the volume of the feed. This is done either via the direct audio feed cable or the volume control on the input device or, more likely for home or business users, it is done directly on the encoding box itself using a software utility.

To modify the audio feed on the local box, open up a terminal session using SSH and become root. A simple command-line tool for volume adjustment is the aumix program. The line marked as "IGain" or "input gain" usually determines the feed volume. Move the slide up three-quarters of the way. This should be loud enough for proper encoding without overdriving the sound. You may need to wait 5-10 seconds to hear the change in volume of your encoded audio depending on the speed of your connection and the quality of the stream.

There are several other GUI audio control utilities available for Linux. Check your GUI desktop manager of choice and verify that an audio control tool is available. If none is, simply open a terminal window and use the command line utilities described above.
