According to the icecast page most any Unix-based system, such as Linux, Solaris or any BSD-based version, can run icecast. There are also binary versions of icecast available for use on Windows-based platforms. I have personally tested icecast and related applications on most versions of Red Hat and SUSE Linux, and I have successfully run icecast in a production environment on the following versions of Red Hat Linux; 6.1, 6.2, 7.2, 7.3, 9, and Fedora Cores 1 through 4 along with RHEL AS3 and AS4. The SUSE versions on which I have successfully tested icecast are SUSE Professional 9.1 through 9.3 as well as SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) 8 and 9. There are several other Linux distributions on which icecast has been successfully tested by other individuals.
In light of marketing changes at Red Hat, many have had to seriously reconsider which Linux distribution is to be the standard. Rather than launch yet another distribution flame war, suffice it to say that I have tested a variety of different Linux distributions and have found each to have merits as well as drawbacks of their own. What distribution to run icecast on should be left to the discretion of the user or administrator. Suffice it to say that icecast works well on nearly all Linux distros. If you are comfortable with one in particular, stay with that release.
