Here are just a few of the many possible ways icecast and compatible streamers can be employed either at home, within your organization or at work.
Possibly the most popular use of icecast. This is why I originally sought out icecast and began using it. This format is generally geared towards streaming live radio over the Internet.
Create your own home audio playlist. Create a selection of favorite songs for playing on any networked machine. These machines can be connected via wireless or LAN and can include family members, neighbors, and friends. Generally, this format plays static audio files organized in a playlist.
Configure a list of popular tunes for you and co-workers to choose from. If your work intranet is underutilized you may even opt to set up multiple audio streams, each broadcasting its own selection of music from different genres. A web page listing the different categories and the stream names may be useful here. You can even rotate the playlist and file selection periodically.
Rather than broadcasting music, create audio files of public service announcements. These files can include work-related news, important bulletins, or even self-improvement audio files. Multiple audio streams can be set up for training purposes; i.e. a unique audio training seminars that are broadcast on a specific date and time. Informative audio books may also be broadcast over the Intranet using icecast, provided the necessary permissions have been obtained from the publisher.
The list goes on. For every possible audio use a way can be found to allow icecast to distribute the data to connected listeners.
